Visiting The Mezquita, Cordoba

 I have been trying to not focus so much on the individual builings, but the bigger shapes instead, and to recreate the mood. It's hard though, and this one is tougher because the value contrast was so little. It was a very grey day. I painted the lower one last month, but it came out very muddy. So I painted another one again yesterday. Still something missing ? :)

Critique & comments welcome.

Btw, the mezquita is exquisite. A couple of lines from the famous 'Mosque of Cordoba' by Allama Iqbal. Enjoy :)!!
Rang ho ya khisht-o-sang, chang ho ya harf-o-saut
mo'eijiza-e-fun ki hai khoon-e-jigar se namood
Just the media these pigments, bricks and stones; This harp, these words and sounds, just the media.
The miracle of art springs from the lifeblood of the artist!

Pier 39, San Francisco

This weekend I had an opportunity to attend a workshop in San Diego with the wonderful artist Keiko Tanabe. It was simply awesome to watch her paint & see her paintings up close!!  She truly is one of the best watercolorists & I think I am really lucky to get a chance like this :) V. inspiring :))

Below is a painting that I did & the value sketch of the same.

Flamenco Dancers of Sacramonte

Human figures are out of my comfort zone, so trying to be a little brave here :) This is a picture of artists singing in a flamenco show that we saw in Granada. The show was conducted in the gypsy caves. The mood and music was wonderful.

Remembering the stroll in the beautiful lanes around the Alcazar - lots of memories rush back as I paint this one, and I yearn to visit Spain again.

I am participating in the SCVWS show Interpretations.
It's my first ever and I am happy about it! They are exhibiting at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Library in San Jose, California. Do drop by to check it out, they have a great collection of paintings for sale. The show is on until August end.

For my entry to the show, I painted this one again, this time changing some of colors a bit. Apologies for the extremely bad photograph, took it in a rush just before dropping off the painting!!

Amsterdam, after sunset

 It was winter evening, and the painting does have a dark, heavy mood to it- However, there is still something missing & I am not sure what it is. Maybe I should show some light in the windows & entrances?! And something about the water too..

I tried painting it a second time, wanted to add more texture to the water, added some more warmer colors, but messed it up. I think the first attempt was better :)

A portrait -study of my 7 month old son ! I had lot of fun painting it, trying to capture the joy & playfulness in his expression . And yeah, his hair is realllyyy that wild, if not more :))

Btw, the background in the painting is left white, I was thinking of adding some color to enhance the light on the left, but then just left it alone . My husband took a bunch of really cute pics of the baby, think I will try some more :)

Noon at the pier, San Francisco

Ships, skyline & some sparklin sunshine ...

Wednesday, May 18, 2011

This one is from the archives - I painted it sometime in 2008 from a photograph taken during our trip to the Redwood National Park. These are such gigantic, beautiful creatures .. Standing on the floor of a redwood forest is a humbling experience, no? :) ...

... And the reason for digging the archives? Oh well, I haven't been able to paint anything for over a month. Been super busy with my 6-month old darling.. Hope to get back to the brushes real soon!

All's right with the world!

The year's at the spring
And day's at the morn;
Morning's at seven;
The hill-side's dew-pearled
The lark's on the wing;
The snail's on the thorn;
God's in his Heaven -
All's right with the world!

On a rainy day

Thinking of home, I miss the Indian monsoon a lot - cold showers after the scorching summer, the fragrance of wet earth, the lush colors that follow , its all so beautiful.

I have put up this painting on the DPW Help Japan challenge - Check out their web site!

The sun never says

Even after all this time
The sun never says to the earth,
"You owe Me."
Look what happens with a love like that.
It lights the whole sky.

- Hafiz (14th-century Sufi poet)

You are my sunshine

You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy when the skies are grey ....
