Sketching in San Francisco

I spent most of my day roaming in San Francisco today. I love going to SF this time of the year- The hoilday lights & decorations, families shopping for gifts, ice rinks and kids ... its all very festive :-) I thought it might be a good idea to sketch .. for the first time ever, I took my pen, a sketchbook and sat down on the road. I have been following urban sketchers for a while & I love it .. but I never thought it would be so much fun. I did feel a little conscious initially, but soon got involved in my task and forgot all about the inhibitions . It's such a different experience - to be part of the moment, part of the scene while you draw it . It can never be obtained from painting from a reference photograph - especially if someone else has taken it, even if it is the exact same location. Below are some of my sketches -

Union Square, right opposite Macy's .

SF & Cable cars .. this big round thing is a wooden platform that rotates, and as it does so, it reverses the direction of the cable car. Fun to watch !

A group of ladies singing christmas carols ..

An interection on Market.. I used the artisitic license to chop off some of the buildings :P ..

There was this beautiful building in chinatown .. would surely like to paint this one sometime. I wanted to put in the row of red lanterns somewhere desperately.. maybe another time :-)

Acrylic on canvas

This weekend I did my first experiment with acrylics... A friend of mine wanted me to paint these cutesy looking pictures :-) for a small charity show. They are replicas of the "Simpler Times" series by Robert Bretz . I actually enjoyed acrylics, I guess partly because I painted them much like watercolors ! (Couldn't resist putting in the spatter for the rain, and no wonder it created a mess !) Anyway, I rushed to the local art store again to get a bunch of canvases . Think I want to try painting a blank canvas in a more abstract, free form .. Oh well, lets see ...

On the way

I painted this one from a photograph I had taken on our recent Yosemite trip. On our way to the Tioga pass, we stopped at this scenic spot with the blue mountains and shadows in the foreground against the perfect late afternoon sun..

We just had our last painting class with Ferenc Besze for this quarter. I really like his painting style - just indicative , no details yet so complete. His demos are fantastic and all the people in the class are fun too - lot of interesting art work goes on ... At the end of every quarter, we usually have a critique and this painting was chosen as one of the better ones .. And for that, Ferenc gave me a painting that he himself made .. Wow ! I know I have sooo much to work on and improve but this is the beginning and it makes me really happy :-) and makes me want to paint more....

Colorful baba

It took me a lot of courage to start with portaits , but finally did it last month. Did this one yesterday based on a photograph I found online. Liked his jacket and turban - and the beard of course :-)
